Customs and documents
Raise customs questions before dispatch
International shipments involve more than the movement of goods. The cargo description, documents and responsibilities also need to be clear. Include your customs questions when requesting transport.
Start with the goods and the parties involved
Describe what you are shipping, where the goods come from and where they are going. Identify the sender and recipient, and explain which documents are already available.
The steps required depend on the shipment and the agreed arrangements. Discuss which parts need to be included in the enquiry. Customs formalities, any charges and the division of responsibilities should be explicit.
Include these details in your enquiry
Cargo information
A clear description, quantities and available commercial or product information.
Route and parties
Origin, destination, sender and recipient, including contact details.
Available documents
Explain which invoices, packing lists or transport documents you already have.
Responsibilities
State what your supplier or another party is handling and what still needs arranging.
Questions about customs and documents
Which documents should I send with my enquiry?
Share documents already available, such as a commercial invoice or packing list. Any additional requirements must be established for the particular goods and route.
Can I enquire if some documents are missing?
Explain what is missing so it can be discussed. An incomplete enquiry is not confirmation that a shipment is ready for dispatch.
Are customs costs automatically included in a transport price?
Do not assume they are. Check which work and costs the proposal covers and which charges or tasks remain with another party.
Discuss your shipment and customs questions
Start with the goods, origin and destination, and explain which documents and arrangements are already in place.
